🍁The First Hints of Change
Here in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the first signs of autumn usually start creeping in around October. Leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow. Sunrise comes a little later, the cicadas fall quiet, and a chill lingers in the early morning air. Even the garden begins to slow, preparing for its long winter nap.
September is the perfect time to begin our own transition into the rhythm of autumn. By easing into shorter days, cooler weather, and a slower pace with the help of herbs, spices, and mindfulness, we can stay at our best without the fatigue that so often comes with seasonal change. Living in harmony with the shifting season – acknowledging its different feel and pace – helps our bodies move forward with energy and vitality.
💡The Energetics of fall
To stay healthy and steady through the seasons, it helps to notice how each one shapes our bodies and energy. Fall is crisp and reflective, a season when we naturally crave warmth and grounding. It’s a time to turn inward, nourish ourselves, and prepare for the cold months ahead.
Ground and Center
Autumn is nature’s way of showing us how to let go. Just as the trees drop their leaves, we’re invited to release what weighs us down – whether that’s old emotions, unhelpful habits, or even extra clutter in our space.
Cultivate Warmth

As the days grow cooler and the sunlight fades, it helps to bring warmth inward. This can be as simple as choosing cozy meals, sipping warming teas, or leaning on spices like cinnamon, ginger, and clove to steady us through the seasonal shift.
Support Breath & Immunity
Fall is also a time to care for our lungs and immune system. Herbs and foods that keep the breath clear and the body resilient can help us move through the season with more ease. Strong lungs, steady immunity, and mindful breathing all make it easier to navigate change without feeling drained.
🌸Companions for the Transition
Elderberry
As the air cools and we spend more time indoors, elderberry becomes one of my favorite allies for immune support. Its rich, dark berries have long been used to strengthen the body’s defenses and help us move through seasonal changes with resilience.
Ashwagandha
Transitions can be taxing, and ashwagandha is a steadying herb that helps the body adapt. Known as an adaptogen, it works gently to ease stress and support energy, making the shift from summer’s pace to autumn’s rhythm feel smoother.
Ginkgo
When the season changes, the nervous system often feels unsettled. Ginkgo supports clarity and circulation, helping us stay grounded and focused. It’s an herb I find especially useful for maintaining balance when life feels in flux.

🍵 Cozy Ways to Welcome These Herbs
The good news is these herbs don’t require complicated preparations to be effective. Elderberries can be simmered into syrups or enjoyed as tea, making them a tasty and supportive daily ritual during cooler months. Ashwagandha is most often taken as a tincture or capsule, but it can also be stirred into warm milk or tea for a calming evening drink. Ginkgo is commonly available as a tincture or tea, and a simple cup during the day can help bring clarity and steadiness when the season feels overwhelming.
Small, steady practices, a spoonful of syrup, a cup of tea, or a daily tincture, are often what make the most difference as our bodies adjust to the shift into fall. Over time, these little rituals remind us that caring for ourselves can be simple, comforting, and deeply nourishing.

✨An Invitation to Notice
Seasonal change reminds us to pause and listen; to our bodies, to the world around us, and to the gentle signals nature sends. As summer shifts into fall, it’s a good time to slow down, release what no longer serves us, and welcome in the small practices that bring warmth and balance.
I’d love to hear how you notice the season changing where you are. What little rituals, herbs, or comforts help you move gracefully into autumn?
