Why self-support matters more than labels, and how herbs and mindfulness can guide the way.
🧩Why Labels Aren’t the Whole Story
There’s a lot of information online about anxiety, and a lot of labels to go with it. Some anxiety is situational – from jobs, family, or finances. Who hasn’t been there? Other anxiety is experiential, stirred up by memories that bring past pain back to the surface. When those experiences are prolonged or severe, the result can move into PTSD or CPTSD (complex PTSD). And sometimes, anxiety is rooted in how our brains are wired. People who think differently, whether through genetics or development, may struggle to interpret life in the ways most others do.
Understanding where anxiety comes from can be helpful. If we can name what’s making us anxious, we can often find better ways to manage it. But there’s a balance. While it’s useful to understand the source, it’s just as important not to get lost in the labels.
In a previous post, CPTSD or Autism — Supporting the Self Beyond Labels, I shared my experience with the crossover confusion between these diagnoses, and how herbs can offer support in either case. In this post, I want to go deeper into the idea of self-support itself — and ask: What if supporting ourselves matters more than the exact category?
🧭My Turning Point

As I shared in my previous post, the root of my anxiety isn’t clear. It could be the trauma of childhood abuse, or it could be that my brain is simply wired differently. Maybe it’s both. Eventually, I realized it didn’t matter. Being a mom and a small business owner required me to function either way.
What that would look like, I wasn’t sure. I made changes in how I interacted with the world. I opted into therapy, which was a big win, and I chose natural herbal support. That choice shaped my path forward and is the main reason I embraced herbalism as my future — something I’ll always be grateful for.
As my life began to feel like a better fit, I started noticing how anxiety affects others. And that’s when I saw just how many labels surround it. The more I read, the louder a little voice inside me became. It said, “Maybe the most important thing isn’t the label, but how we treat ourselves while living with anxiety.” And I began to listen.
It’s important to understand where anxiety comes from – absolutely. But it’s just as important to know how to treat ourselves in the midst of it. Whether it’s a temporary issue or a lifelong companion, our response matters. Awareness without added self-judgment is key. Knowing what soothes us, what helps us feel safe, and practicing kindness toward ourselves, the same kindness we give others, frees us from the heavy burden of unrealistic expectations.
💖Supporting the Self
Regardless of what causes anxiety, the essential need is care for the nervous system. Whether it’s CPTSD, autism, overwhelm, fatigue, or struggles with regulation, all of these challenges can be softened with self-love, patience, and empathy. One of my favorite reminders is: “It’s okay to not be okay.” Once we accept that truth, we can begin exploring how best to support ourselves in those difficult moments. Is it talking to a professional? Letting go of expectations? Or simply sharing a quiet cup of coffee with a friend?

For me, the answer is all of the above. Self-support isn’t a single action, it’s a way of living. It’s the practice of loving ourselves as much as we love the most important people in our lives. And that isn’t selfishness. When we’re at our best, we can offer our best. It really is that simple, and that true.
The truth is, labels describe, but they don’t heal. Healing comes from consistent, simple acts of love toward ourselves. It’s a way of respecting who we are and affirming our own importance. When anxiety is present day after day, this becomes even more vital. Small practices, a positive affirmation, a deep breath and a hug, or stepping away to reset, can be powerful acts of kindness to ourselves.
🌿Herbal Support — Practical Allies
One of the reasons I turn to herbs is that they don’t ask for labels. They don’t require me to prove whether my anxiety comes from trauma, wiring, or circumstance. They simply meet me where I am. A few of my most trusted allies are chamomile for gentle calm, lemon balm for easing racing thoughts, and oat straw for nourishing the nervous system over time. Each one works in its own way, not to erase anxiety completely, but to soften its edges and help me feel more steady.

Herbs aren’t a cure, and they’re not a replacement for therapy or other supports. But they are companions. They remind me that healing is often about steady, everyday care rather than dramatic fixes. That’s the gift plants bring: quiet, consistent support that helps us care for ourselves beyond the label. They work gently in the background, building strength over time and reminding us that real healing is a process, not a destination.
🌙 Conclusion — Beyond Diagnosis
In the end, I’ve learned that labels may describe, but they don’t heal. What brings healing is the way we treat ourselves – with patience, compassion, and consistent care. Whether anxiety comes from CPTSD, autism, or simply the weight of daily life, the truth is the same: our nervous systems need support, and we deserve to give it to ourselves.
Self-support can take many forms; a kind word on paper, a deep breath, a cup of tea, or the steady help of an herbal ally. These small acts add up, reminding us that we’re worthy of the same love we so easily offer to others.
If you’ve ever felt caught up in labels or wondered where you “fit,” know that you’re not alone. Healing doesn’t require a perfect definition, only the willingness to care for yourself, exactly as you are, in this moment.
